Bartermax, Inc. began operations in March 1982 when Owner/President Al Kafka and his then partner-in-crime, famed Boston radio personality Larry Glick, gave a whole new meaning to the phrase “Let’s make a deal”.  With newly printed business cards in hand (bartered for with a local printer), Al and Larry started calling on local and Boston area businesses.  Their first request from the printer was for an alarm, the alarm company needed a fence, the fence company wanted . . . and so the cycle began.  The players have changed over the years, as businesses come and go, but the underlying story remains the same -- barter has become a viable and valuable way for businesses to do business.
 
In June 1990 Bartermax moved its corporate office from Post Office Square in Sharon to its present location on Route One.  Over the next five years it bought out several smaller barter exchanges, expanding its customer base and opening satellite offices in Plymouth, MA and Providence, RI.  Since networking and reprogramming the computer system, Bartermax has consolidated its daily operations and the staff under one roof to better service its clients.

As the barter industry continues to grow, trade exchanges across the country are forming reciprocal associations for the purpose of uniting and strengthening the industry.  Bartermax’s affiliation with these organizations has opened the doors to additional trading opportunities for its members on regional, national and international levels.
